    'Blow Away' - George Harrison
    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=nNetfJQ9HAs

Day turned black, sky ripped apart
Rained for a year 'til it dampened my heart
    Cracks and leaks
    The floorboards caught rot
    About to go down
    I had almost forgot

All I got to do is to love you
All I got to be is, be happy
All it's got to take is some warmth to make it
Blow Away, Blow Away, Blow Away

Sky cleared up, day turned to bright
Closing both eyes now the head filled with light
Hard to remember what a state I was in
    Instant amnesia
    Yang to the Yin

All I got to do is to love you
All I got to be is, be happy
All it's got to take is some warmth to make it
Blow Away, Blow Away, Blow Away

Wind blew in, cloud was dispersed
Rainbows appearing, the pressures were burst
    Breezes a-singing, now feeling good
    The moment had passed
Like I knew that it should

All I got to do is to love you
All I got to be is, be happy
All it's got to take is some warmth to make it
Blow Away, Blow Away, Blow Away

'All Things Must Pass' - George Harrison
    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=QWV4pFV5nX4

    Sunrise doesn't last all morning
A cloudburst doesn't last all day
    Seems my love is up
And has left you with no warning
    But it's not always going
    To be this grey

    All things must pass
    All things must pass away

    Sunset doesn't last all evening
A mind can blow those clouds away
After all this my love is up
    And must be leaving
    But it's not always going
    To be this grey

    All things must pass
    All things must pass away

    All things must pass
None of life's strings can last
So I must be on my way
    And face another day

Now the darkness only stays at night time
In the morning it will fade away
    Daylight is good
At arriving at the right time
    But it's not always going
    To be this grey

    All things must pass
    All things must pass away
    All things must pass
    All things must pass away

    [Verse 1]
    You got a fast car
I want a ticket to anywhere
    Maybe we make a deal
Maybe together we can get somewhere
    Any place is better
Starting from zero, got nothing to lose
    Maybe we'll make something
Me, myself, I got nothing to prove

    [Verse 2]
    You got a fast car
I got a plan to get us outta here
I been working at the convenience store
Managed to save just a little bit of money
Won't have to drive too far
Just 'cross the border and into the city
You and I can both get jobs
Finally see what it means to be living

    [Verse 3]
See, my old man's got a problem
He lives with a bottle, that's the way it is
He says his body's too old for working
His body's too young to look like his
When momma went off and left him
She wanted more from life than he could give
I said "Somebody's gotta take care of him"
So I quit school, and that's what I did

    [Refrain]
    You got a fast car
Is it fast enough so we can fly away?
    We gotta make a decision
Leave tonight, or live and die this way

    [Chorus]
So I remember when we were driving
    Driving in your car
Speed so fast it felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped 'round my shoulder
And I-I had a feeling that I belonged
I-I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone

    [Verse 4]
    You got a fast car
    We go cruising, entertain ourselves
You still ain't got a job
And I work in a market as a checkout girl
I know things will get better
You'll find work and I'll get promoted
We'll move out of the shelter
Buy a bigger house and live in the suburbs

    [Chorus]
So I remember when we were driving
    Driving in your car
Speed so fast it felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped round my shoulder
And I-I had a feeling that I belonged
I-I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone

    [Verse 5]
    You got a fast car
I got a job that pays all our bills
You stay out drinkin' late at the bar
See more of your friends than you do your kids
    I'd always hoped for better
Thought maybe together you and me'd find it
I got no plans, I ain't going nowhere
So take your fast car and keep on driving

    [Chorus]
So I remember when we were driving
    Driving in your car
Speed so fast it felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped around my shoulder
And I-I had a feeling that I belonged
I-I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone

    [Refrain]
    You got a fast car
Is it fast enough so you can fly away?
    You gotta make a decision
Leave tonight or live and die this way

Good find. Who are these guys?

Thanks to and for posting the full lyrics of their entries. I had never got the sense of Chapman's song for instance, never knew what it was about, and you made it talk to me. This is what this thread is about: not just good music, but good texts too, with an existential dimension.

This said, I don't always post the lyrics of my own entries, sometimes because I don't care, other times I trust that people know the words already, so please don't take this as a reproach. Just saying it's nice to discover good lyrics once in a while.

    Who are these guys?Olivier5

Heard of them yesterday! They became famous doing covers of Chicago, the great jazz-rock ensemble from the 60's and 70's, only around 2018. They're Russian and Ukrainian. First I listened to one of the covers, thought, 'pretty good', then I noticed that song, Speck of Dust. Totally amazing song, completely blown away by it, I've listened to it continuously for the last 24 hours. It's a Deep Song, it's about Realisation - 'there's no time, there's no place, only Spirit, full of grace, you can sing, you can fly, and you sure will never die.' And that singer - honest to God, she's like a Greek goddess. I don't know if she's the most beautiful woman I've ever seen, but she sure is the most beautiful vocalist I've ever seen.

    The Speck of Dust

When you find yourself in (a) vicious cycle
Searching for some truth in useless titles
    Seems so complicated
    Too sophisticated
See the world created (is) just the speck of dust

    Bridge:
    Doo-doo-doo-doo Doo-doo-doo-doo
    Explanations
    Doo-doo-doo-doo Doo-doo-doo-doo
    Allegations
    Doo-doo-doo-doo Doo-doo-doo-doo
    Alterations
    Getting lost in translations

    Refrain:
    There’s no time
    There’s no place
    Only spirit full of grace
    You can sing
    You can fly
Now you sure will never die
    No more tears
    No more pain
    Cause’ you found yourself again
    Shining light
    On your way
    To the total freedom

You had been a lone and wasteland rover
When you realized the game is over
    Leave the false temptations
    Free imagination
See the whole creation (is) just the speck of dust

    Bridge:
    Doo-doo-doo-doo, Doo-doo-doo-doo
    Stars and planets
    Doo-doo-doo-doo, Doo-doo-doo-doo
    Rocks and granits
    Doo-doo-doo-doo, Doo-doo-doo-doo
    Now that’s all yours
    Breaking out of the universe

You can find a well-made documentary about them here.

(Earlier this week I watched the scarifying HBO documentary on Chernobyl. This discovery is just such a perfect antidote to that.)

(Oh, and i don't know if you know music theory, but this song is in 5/4 - five beats to the bar. Count it! It's an amazing composition. Mindblowing.)

You know how these things are, highly subjective I mean. My type of girl, she's not your type and vice versa. Which is great as it means there's a type for everyone.

I often wondered about that, about the mystery of this chemistry (literally) between humans that we call physical attraction. I wonder specifically if our genes are speaking to one another through pheromones and even through facial / body types. Reproduction is a dialogue between genes after all. Are genes seeking their complement, their difference, their missing ingredient -- rather than their sameness, which is what a racist theory would say -- by actively shaping what we find subjectively attractive?

I believe in the wisdom of poems and lyrics, but also of proverbs and such. A French saying about love: Il faut trouver chaussure à son pied. Find a shoe fit for your foot.

    "Ma préférence" by Julien Clerc

Andrea Motis is my type of trumpetist:

    Never had nothing
    No one to care
That's why I seem to have
    More than my share
I've got a man crazy for me
    He's funny that way

    When i hurt his feelings
    Once in a while
His only answer is one little smile
I've got that man crazy for me
    He's funny that way

I can see no other way
    And no better plan
Than end it all and let him go
    To some better gal
But why should I leave him
    Why should I go
He'd be unhappy without me I know
I've got that man crazy for me
    He's funny that way

    Though he loves to work
    And slave for me everyday
He'd be so much better off
    If I went away
But why should I leave him
    Why should i go
He'd be unhappy without me I know
    I've got that man
    Mad about me
    He's funny that way

    She's very Billie Holiday.....
  • Olivier5
    6.2k
The song was indeed popularized by Billie Holiday.

It has a long history though.

"She's Funny That Way"[1] or "He's Funny That Way" is a popular song, composed by Neil Moret, with lyrics by Richard Whiting.[2] It was composed for the short film Gems of MGM in 1929 for Marion Harris, but the film was not released until 1931.[1] Harris sang it as "I'm Funny That Way".[3]

A torch song, according to Philip Furia and Michael Lasser, the "song begins self-deprecatingly—'I'm not much to look at, I'm nothing to see'—but "at the end of each chorus, it affirms the lover's good fortune: 'I've got a woman crazy 'bout me, she's funny that way'". ...

The song has generally been covered by female artists as "He's Funny That Way". Thelma Carpenter recorded it in the 1930s at the age of 19, "handling the vocal like a seasoned veteran" according to Dave Oliphant,[5] but it is most associated with Billie Holiday, who first recorded it in 1937.[6] Holiday later featured it on her 1953 album An Evening with Billie Holiday.[7] It was later covered by Mary Osborne with Mary Lou Williams,[8] Etta James for her 2001 album Blue Gardenia[9] and Liza Minnelli.[2]

Original video of Edwin Starr singing his famous song: "War" [Original Music video from 1969]

    War...huh...yeah
    What is it good for?
    Absolutely nothing
    Uh ha haa ha
    War...huh...yeah
    What is it good for?
    Absolutley nothing...say it again y'all
    War..huh...look out...
    What is it good for?
    Absolutely nothing...listen to me ohhhhh

    WAR! I despise,
'cos it means destruction of innocent lives,
War means tears to thousands of mother's eyes,
When their sons gone to fight and lose their lives.

    I said WAR!...huh...good God y'all,
    What is it good for?
    Absolutely nothing...say it again
War! Huh...What is it good for (Edwin sings 'Wohh oh Lord' over the top)
    Absolutely nothing...listen to me

WAR! It ain't nothing but a heartbreaker,
War. Friend only to the undertaker.
Ohhh! War is an enemy to all mankind,
The thought of war blows my mind.
War has caused unrest within the younger generation
Induction then destruction...who wants to die? Ohhh

    WAR! good God y'all huh
    What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing...say it say it SAY IT!
    WAR!...uh huh yeah hu!
    What is it good for?
    Absolutely nothing...listen to me

WAR! It ain't nothing but a heartbreaker,
War! It's got one friend that's the undertaker.
Ohhhh! War has shattered many a young man's dream,
Made him disabled, bitter and mean,
Life is much too short and precious to spend fighting wars these days.
War can't give life, it can only take it away!

    Ohhh WAR! huh...good God y'all
    What is it good for?
    Absolutely nothing...say it again
    War!...huh...woh oh oh Lord
    What is it good for?
    Absolutely nothing...listen to me

War! It ain't nothing but a heartbreaker,
War. Friend only to the undertaker...woo
Peace lovin' understand then tell me,
Is there no place for them today?
They say we must fight to keep our freedom,
But Lord knows there's got to be a better way.

    Ohhhhhhh WAR! huh...good God y'all...
What is it good for?...you tell me!
Say it say it say it saaaay it!
    War! good God now...huh
    What is it good for?
    Stand up and shout it...NOTHING

    https://seattleglobalist.com/2016/05/26/sebastian-junger-veteran-homecoming-town-hall-seattle/51911
Author and filmmaker Sebastian Junger tackles this question in his new book “Tribe: On Homecoming and Belonging,” and in a talk at Town Hall Seattle on Tuesday.

After covering war for more than twenty years, he says he wants to change the way people think about conflict. He believes adversity experienced as a group has the power to create a more cohesive society.

In “Tribe” Junger says that civilians rarely understand the veteran experience and have difficulty building societal cohesion, unless disasters happen on the home front, like 9/11 in New York or the “Blitz” during WWII in London. He points out that violent crime, depression and suicide rates tend to go down during these crises.

Clearly, love and life continue even as wars rage...see any war film...
Though, not sure about the stats re decreased crime, depression and suicide rates.

Anyway, this is the 'Deep Songs' thread...and for sure there were songs written to lift the spirits.
In the UK during WWII, Vera Lynn and George Formby spring to mind...
    But what of war itself.
Other places, other times, other people...

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MmljreTAgYI

Across the street, the river runs
Down in the gutter, life is slippin' away
Let me still exist in another place
Runnin' undercover of a helicopter blade
The flames are gettin' higher in effigy
Burnin' down the bridges of my memory
Love may still be alive somewhere, some way
    Where they're downing only deer
    A hundred steel towns away

Oh, the rhythm of my heart
    Is beatin' like a drum
With the words "I love you"
    Rolling off my tongue
    Oh, never will I roam
Now I know my place is home
Where the ocean meets the sky
    I'll be sailin'

    Photographs, kerosine
Light my darkness, light it up, light it up

I can still feel the touch
    Of your thin blue jeans
    Runnin' down the alley
I've got my eyes all over you baby, oh baby

Oh, the rhythm of my heart
    Is beatin' like a drum
With the words "I love you"
    Rolling off my tongue
    Oh, never will I roam
Now I know my place is home
Where the ocean meets the sky
    I'll be sailin'

Oh, I've got lightning in my veins
Shiftin' like the handle of a slot machine
Love may still exist in another place
I'm just yankin' back the handle, no expression on my face

Oh, the rhythm of my heart
    Is beatin' like a drum
With the words "I love you"
    Rolling off my tongue
    Oh, never will I roam
Now I know my place is home

    Never will I roam
Now I know my place is home
Where the ocean meets the sky
    I'll be sailin'

    [Verse 1]
    (Slave screams)
He thinks he knows what he wants
    (Slave screams)
Thinks he has something to say
    (Slave screams)
He hears but doesn't want to listen
    (Slave screams)
    He's being beat into submission

    [Chorus 1]
Don't open your eyes you won't like what you see
The devils of truth steal the souls of the free
Don't open your eyes, take it from me
I have found you can find happiness in slavery
    Happiness in slavery

    [Verse 2]
    (Slave screams)
He spends his life learning conformity
    (Slave screams)
He claims he has his own identity
    (Slave screams)
He's going to cause the system to fall
    (Slave screams)
But he's glad to be chained to that wall

    [Chorus 2]
Don't open your eyes you won't like what you see
The blind have been blessed with security
Don't open your eyes, take it from me
I have found you can find happiness in slavery
    Happiness in slavery
    Happiness in slavery
    Happiness in slavery
    Happiness...

    [Bridge]
    I don't know what I am, I don't know where I've been;
Human junk, just words and so much skin
Stick my hands through the cage of this endless routine
Just some flesh caught in this big broken machine

    [Outro]
    Happiness in slavery (x18)
    Happiness
    Happiness
    It controls you
    Happiness
    It controls you
