I saw her today at the reception
A glass of wine in her hand
I knew she would meet her connection
At her feet was her footloose man
No, you can't always get what you want
But if you try sometime you find
    You get what you need

And I went down to the demonstration
To get my fair share of abuse
Singing, "We're gonna vent our frustration
    If we don't we're gonna blow a fifty-amp fuse"
You can't always get what you want...

I went down to the Chelsea drugstore
    To get your prescription filled
I was standing in line with Mr. Jimmy
And man, did he look pretty ill
We decided that we would have a soda
    My favorite flavor, cherry red
I sung my song to Mr. Jimmy
Yeah, and he said one word to me, and that was "dead"
    I said to him
You can't always get what you want...

I saw her today at the reception
In her glass was a bleeding man
She was practiced at the art of deception
Well, I could tell by her blood-stained hands
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes you just might find
    You just might find
    You get what you need...

    Kiss away,

For me, The Stones' "best album" is a three-way tie (I don't know anyone who actually agrees with me):

    Let It Bleed
    Sticky Fingers
    Some Girls

For my filthy lucre, man, everything before 1969 just rehearsed - prepared - them for this peak; nothing (except for Tattoo You which is mostly from the early-mid 70s) on the down slope after, or since 1978, really matters much as fully realized albums.

    I remember when
I remember, I remember when I lost my mind
There was something so pleasant about that place
Even your emotions have an echo in so much space

And when you're out there, without care
Yeah, I was out of touch
But it wasn't because I didn't know enough
    I just knew too much

    Does that make me crazy?
    Possibly

And I hope that you are having the time of your life
    But think twice
    That's my only advice
Come on now, who do you
Who do you think you are?
    Hahaha, bless your soul
You really think you're in control?

    Well
    I think you're crazy
    Just like me

    My heroes had the heart
To lose their lives out on a limb
And all I remember, is thinking
    I wanna be like them

    Ever since I was little
Ever since I was little it looked like fun
And there's no coincidence I've come
And I can die when I'm done

    But maybe I'm crazy
    Maybe you're crazy
    Maybe we're crazy
    Probably

    The afternoon has gently
    passed me by
The evening spreads its sail against
    the sky
    Waiting for tomorrow
    just another day
    God bid yesterday
    good-bye
    ...
    The future is but a
    question mark
    Hangs above my head there
    in the dark

    Can't see for the brightness
    is staring me blind
    God bid yesterday
    good-bye

    The deception with tact
Just what are you trying to say?
You got a blank face, which irritates
Communicate, pull out your party piece
    You see dimensions in two
State your case with black or white
    But when one little cross
Leads to shots, grit your teeth
You run for cover so discreet

    The impression that you sell
Passes in and out like a scent
But the long face that you see
Comes from living close to your fears
If this is up, then I'm up
But you're running out of sight
You've seen your name on the walls
    And when one little bump
Leads to shock miss a beat
You run for cover and there's heat

    Then it's easy to believe
    Somebody's been lying to me
    But when the wrong word
    Goes in the right ear
I know you've been lying to me
It's getting rough, off the cuff
I've got to say enough's enough
    Bigger the harder, he falls
    But when the wrong antidote
Is like a bulge on the throat
You run for cover in the heat
    Why don't they

    Do what they say
    Say what you mean
Oh baby, one thing leads to another
    You told me something wrong
I know I listen too long
But then one thing leads to another

I was 'round when Jesus Christ
Had his moment of doubt and pain
    Made damn sure that Pilate
Washed his hands and sealed his fate

    Pleased to meet you

They wanna sell it out, buy it up
    And dumb it down
A good god is hard to find
I'll join the crowd that wants to see me dead
Right now I feel I belong for the first time

Multiply your death, divide by sex
Add up the violence and what do you get?

We are all just stars and we're waiting
We are all just scarred and we're hating
We are all just stars on your burning flag

You can point your gun at me
And hope it will go away
    But if God was alive
    He would hate you anyway

    My right wing is flapping
    The left wing is grey

I never saw your tears until they rolled down your face

Where did all the blue skies go?
Poison is the wind that blows from the north

    Oh mercy, mercy me
Oh things ain't what they used to be, no no
Oil wasted on the oceans and upon our seas,
    Fish full of mercury
    Ah, oh mercy, mercy me
Ah things ain't what they used to be, no no
Radiation under ground and in the sky
Animals and birds who live nearby are dying
    Oh mercy, mercy me

How much more abuse from man can she stand?

You see, war is not the answer

    Picket lines
    Picket signs
    Don't punish me

Now the king told the boogie men
"You have to let that raga drop"
The oil down the desert way
Has been shakin' to the top
The Sheik he drove his Cadillac
He went a-cruisin' down the ville
    The Muezzin was a-standin'
    On the radiator grille

The Shareef don't like it [Shareef = the bosses]
Rock the Casbah, rock the Casbah
    The Shareef don't like it
Rock the Casbah, rock the Casbah

    By order of the prophet
    We ban that boogie sound
    Degenerate the faithful
    With that crazy Casbah sound
But the Bedouin they brought out the electric camel drum
The local guitar picker got his guitar-pickin' thumb
As soon as the Shareef had cleared the square
    They began to wail

    The Shareef don't like it
    Rock the Casbah

    Now, over at the temple
Oh, they really pack 'em in
    The in-crowd say it's cool
    To dig this chanting thing
But as the wind changed direction
And the temple band took five
    The crowd caught a whiff
    Of that crazy Casbah jive

    The Shareef don't like it....

The king called up his jet fighters
"He said you better earn your pay
Drop your bombs between the minarets
    Down the Casbah way"
As soon as the Shareef was chauffeured outta there
The jet pilots tuned to the cockpit radio blare
As soon as the Shareef was outta their hair
    The jet pilots wailed

    Shareef don't like it
Rock the Casbah, rock the Casbah
Shareef don't like it, he thinks it's not kosher
Rock the Casbah, rock the Casbah
Shareef don't like it, fundamentally can't take it
Rock the Casbah, Rock the Casbah
Shareef don't like it, you know he really hates it

There you go, it starts again
Everywhere and in the sweet France
    Here they go again
    Everywhere, everywhere, they advance
    The lesson wasn't enough
Must say that we chose to forget
Everywhere, the speeches are the same
Stranger, you are the cause of our problems!
I thought it was all over
But no, no, it was just a pause

    Here they go again...

    The lesson wasn't enough
    Memories we chose to forget
    Away, away, strangers!
That is the remedy of civilized men
    Beware, they thrive
    While we avert our eyes
    Beware, they thrive
    While we avert our eyes

    Here they go again..

    The lesson hasn't been learned
    Memories we chose to forget
Everywhere I hear what they say
Foreigners you are the cause of our problems!

And that I'm going to laugh
I know that in the dark
    You can't see 'nada'

    The sunset lasted two seconds
    I'm burning inside
    The soul and the body
    Blood is boiling
    The sunset lasted two seconds

And I can't be like this anymore
    Without soul or body
    I'm burning inside
    I burn, I burn, I burn, I burn

    I know you won't come
No one is going to teach you
What it's like to be like this
    That in this loneliness
    Facing the truth
    It's almost like running away

    The sunset lasted two seconds
    I'm burning inside

Curtis Mayfield- [Don’t worry] If There’s a Hell Below, We’re All Going to Go

    [Spoken: Woman]
Last night, I was so depressed
And I went and got the Bible
And I turned to the book of Revelations
And if people would just get and read the Bible
And read the book of Revelations
They would really turn around and straighten up
This is all we need to do, is just get the good book
And read it and put it to everyday life

    [Spoken: Curtis Mayfield]
    Sisters
    Niggers
    Whiteys
    Jews
    Crackers
    Don't worry
    If there's hell below
    We're all
    Gonna go

    [Vocal]
    Sisters
    Brothers and the whiteys
    Blacks and the crackers
    Police and their backers
    They're all political actors

    Hurry
    People running from their worries
While the judge and his juries
Dictate the law that's partly flaw

    Cat calling
    Love balling, fussing and a-cussing
    Top billing now is killing
For peace, no one is willing
Kind of make you get that feeling

    Everybody smoke
Use the pill and the dope
    Educated fools
    From uneducated schools
    Pimping people is the rule
    Polluted water in the pool
And Nixon talking 'bout, "Don't worry"
    He say, "Don't worry"
    He say, "Don't worry"
    He say, "Don't worry"
    But they don't know
    There can be no show
    And if there's hell below
    We're all gonna go
    Everybody praying
    And everybody saying
But when come time to do
    Everybody's laying
    Just talking 'bout, "Don't worry"
    They say, "Don't worry"
    They say, "Don't worry"
    They say, "Don't worry"

    Sisters
    Brothers and the whiteys

    But they don't know
    There can be no show
    And if there's hell below
    We're all gonna go
    Lord, what we gonna do?
Tell me what we gonna do?
If everything I say is true
This ain't no way it ought to be
If only all the mass could see
But they keep talking 'bout, "Don't worry"
    They say, "Don't worry"
    They say, "Don't worry"
    They say, "Don't worry"

It’s been 22 years, but this song could have been written yesterday. I guess some things will never change...

    Tupac- Changes

    Come on come on
I see no changes wake up in the morning and I ask myself
Is life worth living should I blast myself?
I'm tired of bein' poor and even worse I'm black
My stomach hurts so I'm lookin' for a purse to snatch
Cops give a damn about a negro
Pull the trigger kill a nigga he's a hero
Give the crack to the kids who the hell cares
One less hungry mouth on the welfare
First ship 'em dope and let 'em deal the brothers
Give 'em guns step back watch 'em kill each other
"It's time to fight back, " that's what Huey said
Two shots in the dark now Huey's dead
I got love for my brother but we can never go nowhere
Unless we share with each other
    We gotta start makin' changes
Learn to see me as a brother instead of two distant strangers
And that's how it's supposed to be
How can the Devil take a brother if he's close to me?
I'd love to go back to when we played as kids
But things changed, and that's the way it is

That's just the way it is
Things will never be the same
That's just the way it is
    Aww yeah

That's just the way it is
Things will never be the same
That's just the way it is
    Aww yeah

I see no changes all I see is racist faces
Misplaced hate makes disgrace to races
We under I wonder what it takes to make this
One better place, let's erase the wasted
Take the evil out the people they'll be acting right
'Cause both black and white is smokin' crack tonight
And only time we chill is when we kill each other
It takes skill to be real, time to heal each other
And although it seems heaven sent
We ain't ready, to see a black President, uh
It ain't a secret don't conceal the fact
The penitentiary's packed, and it's filled with blacks
But some things will never change
Try to show another way but you stayin' in the dope game
Now tell me what's a mother to do
Bein' real don't appeal to the brother in you
You gotta operate the easy way
(I made a G today) But you made it in a sleazy way
Sellin' crack to the kid (I gotta get paid
Well hey, well that's the way it is

That's just the way it is
Things will never be the same
That's just the way it is
    Aww yeah

That's just the way it is
Things will never be the same
That's just the way it is
    Aww yeah

    We gotta make a change
It's time for us as a people to start makin' some changes
Let's change the way we eat, let's change the way we live
And let's change the way we treat each other
You see the old way wasn't working so it's on us to do
What we gotta do, to survive

And still I see no changes can't a brother get a little peace?
It's war on the streets and the war in the Middle East
Instead of war on poverty they got a war on drugs
So the police can bother me
    And I ain't never did a crime I ain't have to do
But now I'm back with the blacks givin' it back to you
Don't let 'em jack you up, back you up
Crack you up and pimp smack you up
You gotta learn to hold ya own
They get jealous when they see ya with ya mobile phone
But tell the cops they can't touch this
I don't trust this when they try to rush I bust this
That's the sound of my tool you say it ain't cool
My mama didn't raise no fool
And as long as I stay black I gotta stay strapped
And I never get to lay back
'Cause I always got to worry 'bout the pay backs
Some buck that I roughed up way back
Comin' back after all these years
Rat-a-tat-tat-tat-tat that's the way it is, uh

That's just the way it is
Things will never be the same
That's just the way it is
    Aww yeah

That's just the way it is
Things will never be the same
That's just the way it is
    Aww yeah

    Some things will never change

It's a wonder man can eat at all
When things are big that should be small
Who can tell what magic spells we'll be doing for us
And I'm giving all my love to this world
    Only to be told
    I can't see
    I can't breathe
    No more will we be
And nothing's going to change the way we live
'Cause we can always take but never give
And now that things are changing for the worse,
See, its a crazy world we're living in
And I just can't see that half of us immersed in sin
Is all we have to give these
Futures made of virtual insanity now
Always seem to, be governed by this love we have
For useless, twisting, our new technology
Oh, now there is no sound for we all live underground
And I'm thinking what a mess we're in
Hard to know where to begin
If I could slip the sickly ties that earthly man has made
And now every mother, can choose the color
    Of her child
    That's not nature's way
Well that's what they said yesterday
There's nothing left to do but pray
    I think it's time I found a new religion
    Whoa, it's so insane
    To synthesize another strain
    There's something in these
Futures that we have to be told
Futures made of virtual insanity now
Always seem to, be governed by this love we have
For useless, twisting, our new technology
Oh, now there is no sound for we all live underground
    Now there is no sound
    If we all live underground
    And now it's virtual insanity
    Forget your virtual reality
    Oh, there's nothing so bad
    I know yeah
Of this virtual insanity, we're livin' in
    Has got to change, yeah
Things, will never be the same
    And I can't go on
While we're livin' in oh, oh virtual insanity
Oh, this world, has got to change
'Cause I just, I just can't keep going on, it was virtual
Virtual insanity that we're livin' in, that we're livin' in
That virtual insanity is what it is
Futures made of virtual insanity now
Always seem to, be governed by this love we have
For useless, twisting, our new technology
Oh, now there is no sound for we all live underground
Futures made of virtual insanity now
Always seem to, be governed by this love we have
For useless, twisting, our new technology
Oh, now there is no sound for we all live underground
    Living, virtual insanity
    Living, virtual insanity
    Living, virtual insanity
    Living, virtual insanity
Virtual insanity is what we're living in
