    Shadow and Other are the white to your black. They're the tails to your heads. To love the Other is to love yourself, because your existence is entirely dependent on it.

    But you can't love Shadow by definition. All you can do is aspire to allow it.

    It makes for eternally churning emotion: love hate love hate love hate.

    I was so wrapped up in the idea at the time that it didn't even occur to me that I needed to say more. We're each locked in a love-hate relationship with ourselves.

    This is the theme of Kierkegaard's Sickness Unto Death, and it also shows up in Nietzsche, Heidegger, and Jung.

    Nietzsche is probably the most fun, so: Nietzsche's enigmatic concept of the self. That's the right starting point. I think.
