For the porpoises of this discussion, let's imagine that I walk around all day, everyday, with a spear up my nose. You try to talk to me about the spear, but I don't understand what you're trying to say, because you're a porpoise, so you don't speak my language. I try to teach you, but you just roll your eyes at me, as though all you care about is swimming about and eating fish.

Why do I have a spear up my nose? How did it get there? And are all fully aquatic marine animals dicks, or is it just porpoises?

Oh, and by the way, although it will at first no doubt escape your notice, later on, I will reveal that this is in fact an ingenious metaphor about class consciousness.

Someone mistakenly supposed a spear shoved up your nose would eventually pierce grey matter and kill you?

Are you suggesting that capitalism is not in fact just a stage in history, which will eventually collapse due to internal contradictions, and be replaced by socialism? The "spear" is the proletariat, my "nose" is the status quo, and the "grey matter" is capitalism?

I thought I was suggesting you... don't have a brain. But, maybe the whole problem runs deeper than that. Hmm... Yes! The proletariat are stuck in the status quo and cannot effect any damage on the prevailing "grey" (dull, inert, obscured) matter of capitalism. A nose job is urgently required...

No, you can't have been. You must have only thought that that's what you were doing because the porpoises have been whispering in your ear. Well, not so much whispering, more a sort of clicking, wailing sound.
