That's American capitalist propaganda. Thanks to the Sugar Association we don't (for real, it's a whole thing). You have to live like a medieval peasant to get healthy. — frank
I doubt that it's nearly as terrible as you describe it. No country is perfect. It would be a good start to undermine any legitimacy it has and for it to be universally ackowledged as the most destructive country on the planet. — StreetlightX
But who is going to hold the US accountable anyhow? We don't respect the international criminal court.Biden is the head of American Empire. It's literally his job to ensure the US can get away with murders it commits. — StreetlightX
I try not to attack anyone's identity because the ensuing debate inevitably turns personal. Is it even worth it to engage with these people? — Xtrix
Yeah, it sucks for women. :confused:And our women aren't our women. And they can show more skin. — James Riley
I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with monarchs. A little backwards, yes. So is the US.But I will say, fuck a monarchy — James Riley
Doesn't seem like the smartest idea...It's so infuriating.. nothing left to do then but take control, let's storm the Capitol Building... oh... oops... — Tom Storm
Saudi Arabia.Which country doesn't suck? — frank
I love the rhyming too. I also love the dark Gothic atmosphere and the mythology surrounding it. I don't know how to explain it, but kind of sad in a beautiful way.Yes. I like "The Raven" too. I find the internal rhymes very affecting, satisfying. I like poems that run away from you if you're not careful. — T Clark
Most of the controversy in philosophy is related to differences in metaphysics and the fact that most philosophers don’t recognize that ways of seeing reality are not right or wrong, they are just more or less useful ways of seeing things in a particular situation. — T Clark
The answer to that question is in your OP. :brow:Of course not, but that opens up an interesting question. Is my understanding that metaphysical questions are not matters of fact but of usefulness a metaphysical question? — T Clark
:lol:As for "neoliberal entrepreneurial values,"... whatever my illusions or delusions, I don't think they have anything to do with neoliberalism. — T Clark
Who knows?Right. So the test, maybe good for some things, is maybe just overblown. — hanaH
Perhaps. But when adults give it too much thought, I imagine they've never done intellectual work with smart people. — hanaH
Exactly! The video I posted early, physicist Michio Kaku argues that IQ is merely "bookkeeping" ability. He mentions other forms of intelligence (such as planning and scheming). When you are kid and no one trusts you with anything real, they give you a pencil and a test. — hanaH
Yeah, and some problems require other brain abilities (besides IQ): coordination, organization, time management, rational thinking, etc..In the real world, there are actual, difficult problems to be solved...as well as financial rewards for solving them. — hanaH
There's a famous book called The Bell Curve that argues all sorts of connections between IQ and abilities. The book has long since attracted a ton of criticism because it links race and IQ.I'm not surprised by this at all. Note that this does not say that they are reliable indicators of other kinds of ability. — hanaH
I agree. Some people are smarter than other. Just a fact of life.I will say this: intuitively, a person incapable of complex work in the real world is probably incapable of scoring well on an IQ test. It's also intuitively plausible that those who do well on an IQ test are more likely to be able to handle such complex tasks. — hanaH
I don't think it was meant for vanity. There's a horrible history of people misusing the IQ test (racism, eugenics). The test was originally used to help school children. I like what Steven Hawking said “People who boast about their I.Q. are losers.”That said, is it not strange to fetishize tests that merely suggest the possibility of achievement as opposed to the achievement itself? — hanaH
