Deliberately introducing new constraints, psychological or otherwise, to ensure you are miserable enough to match your fears for the world does seems irrational to me.Baden

Perhaps there isnt any choice in the matter for some of 'us'. Perhaps some of us just cant escape (ignore) the impending feeling of doom sparked by the reality of how we as a species are diminishing our chance(s) for survival on a longer term. Perhaps it is simply a matter of a (build in) biological construct ('instinct'?) kicking in whenever 'it' recognizes potential danger/threats (and not neccessarily on the personal level). What if the irrationality, that what you perceive to be irrationality, is in fact 'the healthy response' in the context of survival.

And here is sciences biggest problem, there is only a short period of recorded history. Something that is today "Once in a century" might very well have been a common thing 20 or 100 centuries ago.

We do know that humans are helping the problem along with their abuse of the environment, but is it really the only cause?

If there (ever) had been a species living on this planet (before us) matching atleast our current degree of industrialization and technological advancement, i.e. matching atleast the sheer size and the impact of our combined ecological footprint till thusfar, it would have been more logical to me questioning the plausibility of what the OP is suggesting.

    Cornelis Vreeswijk - background information

    Cornelis Vreeswijk (8 August 1937 – 12 November 1987) was a Dutch-born Swedish singer-songwriter, poet and actor.

He emigrated to Sweden with his parents in 1949 at the age of twelve. He was educated as a social worker and hoped to become a journalist, but became increasingly involved in music, performing at events for students with idiosyncratic humor and social engagement. Cornelis Vreeswijk is considered one of the most influential and successful troubadours in Sweden. In 2010 a Swedish drama film, called "Cornelis", was made about his life. It was directed by Amir Chamdin.

Is there any difference between how one begins one's day in the medieval age and in the modern age?Agent Smith

The Timeline channel provides the answer to such questions, from daily medieval life to building a castle with medieval tools.

As far as I can tell toilette and a good breakfast was common to both eras, but then after that ..

Which culture? The Aztecs must have had a very different morning ritual compared to that of the Inuit or compared to that of whatever other culture.

    The Manhattans

    "Kiss And Say Goodbye" (1976)

This has got to be the saddest day of my life
I called you here today for a bit of bad news
I won't be able to see you anymore
Because of my obligations, and the ties that you have
    We've been meeting here everyday
And since this is our last day together
I wanna hold you just one more time
When you turn and walk away, don't look back
I wanna remember you just like this
Let's just kiss and say goodbye

I had to meet you here today
There's just so many things to say
Please don't stop me 'till I'm through
This is something I hate to do
We've been meeting here so long
I guess what we done, oh was wrong
    Please darling, don't you cry
Let's just kiss and say goodbye

Many months have passed us by
    (I'm gonna miss you)
    I'm gonna miss you, I can't lie
    (I'm gonna miss you)
I've got ties, and so do you
I just think this is the thing to do
    It's gonna hurt me, I can't lie
Maybe you'll meet, you'll meet another guy
Understand me, won't you try, try, try, try, try, try, try
Let's just kiss and say goodbye

    (I'm gonna miss you)
    I'm gonna miss you, I can't lie
    (I'm gonna miss you)
    Understand me, won't you try
    (I'm gonna miss you)
    It's gonna hurt me, I can't lie
    (I'm gonna miss you)
Take my handkerchief, wipe your eyes
    (I'm gonna miss you)
Maybe you'll find, you'll find another guy
    (I'm gonna miss you)
Let's kiss and say goodbye, pretty baby
    (I'm gonna miss you)
    Please, don't you cry
    (I'm gonna miss you)
    Understand me, won't you try
    (I'm gonna miss you)
    Let's just kiss
    And say goodbye

  • Why are people so afraid to admit they are wrong here?

According to psychology humility gets easily confused with weakness and presenting oneself (too) vulnerable.

Projecting a facade of infallibility could be explained as yet a(nother) form of (social) escapism (hiding ones face) which as a consequence also prevents any (sincere) social contact as the 'subject' isnt true to form, i.e. remains 'unknown' to its surroundings.

I feel about the same way, dystopia sits just around the corner, parts of the world allready living it (an industrial giant like China springs to mind). However it also feels rather inevitable ("home is where our rockets could potentially bring us"), especially so because the elite minority of powermongers wont take reason for an answer and wont answer to anyone but themselve's.

It is hard to look the other way, depressing even when not being able to do so.

I cant find much about it making sense to me honestly, apart from the local burial traditions.

    So I'm curious.
  • Near death experiences. Is similar or dissimilar better?
I've had some rather bizar experiences in the past myself regarding unexplained phenomena, even one shared with another person. And while I wont go into detail about it and while science most probably would all to easily (and eagerly for that matter) write each single occurence off as just another illusory stress induced experience I have lived it all the same.

While I am very cautious concerning any (false) sensory data and any possible illusions coughed up by the brain during any stressful periods I am also aware that despite my own scepsis the possibility exists that the experiences werent false or illusory at all. Personally I consider it to be equally unwise dismissing such phenomena out of hand as to blindly accept them to be true.

That seems to be a good (and logical) strategy for any teacher but then I guess strategy alone isnt going to cut it, you have to be somewhat of a natural to be able to stretch it that long, committed and tried at that as in the end human interaction is all about relationship. After all, the outcome of the course of all interpersonal relationships heavily depend on the mutual affection and the respect between participants, it is so during romantic relationships as well as during amicable relationships. I suppose it is no different between a teacher and students. Someone we experience as pleasant and accessible will attract us while unpleasant people repel us. Thus it is probably very logical that a teacher who is pleasant to deal with ultimately also has the most clout when it comes to the transfer of learning material.

Figures as beratement not only shows weakness on the part of the one doing it but also shuts down the willingness to absorb ongoing information coming from such a source. I guess it displays multiple negative character traits at once and why would one be willing to take the doings of such a character, or the things coming from such a character, as an example?!

Causing learning, is a totally different skillset.universeness
I remember having different teachers for every new schoolyear and consequently there were schoolyears when learning equalled overal positive experiences, with a general eagerness heading off to school every morning and in which absorbing data was a natural given, while during others I absolutely dreaded the place, absorbed far less and in which I hated the ones doing the teaching.

I will berate those who berate but mainly in defensive modeuniverseness
Which is understandable and an appropriate response, atleast when having enough self-respect and an appreciation for any mutual respect going on.
